When our designer first started making live edge slab wood furniture many years ago, one question was asked repeatedly.
Why make furniture that is basically a whole tree with edges that are not straight and "boards" that are so incredibly wide?
The answer has not changed over the years. Our designer, Ward Troetschel answers that question this way -
"Live edge hardwood - it is strong, it is beautiful , it is real."
So often in the technologically driven world we live in, the products that make up our life are a product of technology. As a person living in this 21st century so often the products that make up our lives are cheap plastic imitations of real, that "wood grain" furniture in your house that you just know is particleboard with a cheap laminate covering to make it look like "real wood" , the clothes you wear made out of synthetic fabrics, the food you buy at the local supermarket with way too much plastic packaging, the food in those plastic packages with chemical additives you can not pronounce and shudder to think of what they could be doing to your body. I was reading a package the other day and what is "ethyl methyl phenylglycidate" and why is it in my food?
Technology is good, the problem arises when some people / corporations corrupt technology to sell the consumer a version of real, but not what is real.
Here at Edinboro Creations all the wood we use is real wood - we use locally grown and harvested hardwoods to create each table , one piece at a time, by hand.
So, exactly what is live edge hardwood? It means that the edges are not straight, but are the actual outside edges of the tree with nothing removed. Sometimes the bark is still on the wood and sometimes it sheds off its bark as a part of the natural process of drying wood so it is stable enough to be used to make furniture.

One piece at a time, by hand is more than a slogan
it is a way of life and of business that means making
each piece individually and making each piece primary
with simple hand tools followed by hand applying our
own hand rubbed finish. We feel that this intense level
of commitment to each piece of fine furniture we build
is essential to producing gallery quality home furnishings.
We hand build live edge slab sofa tables , entry tables, dining tables, occasional tables, beds, custom desks, executive desks and coffee tables that are all one of a kind. All tables are hand built using simple tools and hand finished using a hand rubbed oil finish.
We use locally sourced hardwoods that are hand selected for their strength and beauty.
***Please note that the term "live edge" and "slab wood" or used interchangable in the furniture industry. So when this website mentions "live edge" or "slab wood" this is a reference to the same concept of using the whole tree including the live edge that the bark is normally attached to. Sometimes in our designs the bark is still attached and sometimes the bark naturally falls off the live edge as the wood dries.****
